About
While the reality of German society is very diverse, graphic design still fails to reflect this. As designers we shape the space around us and are responsible for the messages and images that inform and influence society. Therefore it is vital that different perspectives are represented in order to avoid reproducing stereotypes or only addressing the white majority.
Represent Network highlights the work of BPOC and/or (post)migrant visual communicators living and working in Germany. The aim is to heighten their visibility – to facilitate connecting and establishing networks and to provide representation and role models for young creatives. Currently this happens online via this website which works as a directory and through a parallel Instagram channel @represent.network where the creatives, their work and the process behind it are introduced in detail.
In February the first Represent Network event took place looking at diversity and visibility at art academies in Germany and planning is under way for the second event this spring.
This is part of the diploma project of Jasmina Begović in communication design at Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design 2021.
